Austin didn't know I was coming + a travel ick
Keepin' it Weird in Austin
I needed to figure out my next destination after PV since Los Angeles wasn't going to work out. I was texting my friend Tyler from Des Moines about something random and at the end of the convo I told him to keep me posted on his whereabouts since he travels a lot for work and maybe our paths would cross.
It just so happened he and some other buddies from Des Moines were planning a weekend getaway to Austin so he said I should come for the weekend and surprise the guys. A couple ended up knowing I was coming, but a few (including Austin) didn't so it was fun surprising them and hanging out for the weekend. On the first night we hit the Iron Bear and Rain on 4th for the dancers in the group!
I worked Friday during the day and went walking around downtown after work in search of some food and some new sneakers. For lunch I passed by Cooper's Pit Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que and stopped in. I wasn't in search of Texas BBQ, but this did not disappoint! They carve the meat for you right there and weigh it like a grocery store. After lunch, I stopped into a sneaker shop called Sneaker Politics and got a new set of kicks.
At night, the crew watched this week's episode of Ru Paul's Drag race at Oilcan Harry's, and then went to The Pub for some food. There was a question asked of the waitress at The Pub about which of the 8 gay men at the table she would punch in the face. She picked ME which generated a good reaction out of everyone! However, her reasoning was because I looked like I was the nicest. I'm taking it as a compliment!
Saturday we hit up Rainey street and grabbed some beers and grub at Banger's Sausage House and Beer Garden and then we watched both the Chiefs and Iowa State MBB games at Buford's on West 6th Street. When I tell you I screamed when I saw Caitlin Clark with T. Swift at the Chiefs game…
We didn't really get to 6th Street at night which I wasn't mad about! I did have lunch over there on Saturday afternoon. The weather was beautiful so I walked aimlessly for about 3 miles or so early that afternoon just checking things out.
I really enjoyed my short time in Austin and would like to check it out again sometime. I like how it's in the Central Time Zone from a work standpoint, but I liked how active everyone was while I was out on Saturday afternoon and there seemed to just be a great buzz around the city.
Sunday was a travel day and Monday is a holiday so I'm looking forward to catching up on laundry and settling down for a minute. Although I'm off to somewhere a little colder, I'm luckily missing most of the arctic blast hitting the rest of the country.
Travel Ick
On one of my flights, I was on the aisle where there were three seats on each side. The woman in the middle seat decided to lug her Chick-fil-A onto the plane. Not only did it smell, she had to wait until we were well into the air until she could use her tray table to enjoy her nugs. She also had multiple dipping sauces that proved to be difficult to open and navigate in the middle seat so there were a lot of elbow bumps.
You have time to eat your nugs before you get on the plane, Jessica.
Where I stayed: Hilton Austin (Austin, TX)
Upcoming Locations: Salt Lake City, Phoenix, San Francisco, Sacramento, Las Vegas, Palm Springs
Favorites: Lime Scooters, Waymo (although I didn't use it on this trip, I love the option!), Cooper's BBQ (Brisket, Turkey, Mac and Cheese)
I completely agree. Jessica must never carry on nuggets. The worst.
